Not only do loons have a striking appearance with their red eyes and black and white feathers, they also have a strange and haunting sound that can be heard from far distances. Loons hail back all the way to prehistoric times and are close relatives of other extinct prehistoric birds. Though loons are good swimmers the position of their feet makes taking off on land difficult. Some scientists even believe loons may be relatives to early penguins.
