51. Karen Hodges Explains: Employer or Landlord?

PMU School: A Podcast For Artists by Artists

Before you add to your team it’s important to decide if you’re better suited to being a landlord or an employer. How involved do you want to be in things like products, techniques and scheduling? Are you prepared to be financially obligated for payroll taxes? And what about Independent Contractors? Find out what type of work arrangement is best for you on today’s episode of PMU School with industry expert, Karen Hodges.

Salon Guru, Karen Hodges, changed careers from business and finance to the beauty industry in 1998. She has been a day spa employee, a booth renter, a salon owner and is now a solo practitioner in her studio in Fort Myers, FL.

Education is what it's all about. Karen was the person they sent to workshops to learn new software or office programs and products in her first career in the business world. That certainly followed her into my second career in the beauty industry! Karen's first cosmetology license was in nail technology, but she shortly started school again for her esthetics training. As a nail technician, she competed in the national competition arena garnering several trophies. She became a certified nail competition judge for industry icon, Vicki Peters.

A few years into her salon career, Karen became a certified trainer for the Association of Electric File Manufacturers (AEFM) and taught hands-on certification courses in proper and safe use of electric files. Around that time, she also began writing for industry publications such as NAILS, Nailpro, Les Nouvelle Esthetiques, Skin, Dermascope, Beauty Store Business and others.

In 2014, Karen reduced her nail and esthetics services to a very exclusive clientele and partnered with industry leader Janet McCormick to found Nailcare Academy and a sister educational company, Salon Gurus. These original companies have website platforms which actively host high-quality educational training programs for the beauty industry. In addition, the partners offer advanced foot care training for nurses and medical assistants. In 2016, Karen pursued a long-held dream of learning PMU. She has been training and performing brow and eyeliner procedures in her studio, along with her activities as an educator and in 2019 Salon Gurus launched a new website at PermanentMakeupTraining.com to host excellent classes from leading permanent cosmetics practitioners and trainers. Today, Karen often travels to US tradeshows as a speaker for America’s Beauty Show, CIDESCO, IECSC, ISSE, NASN and other organizations. Her classes are popular and highly-rated.
