St. John Henry Newman - On the Fitness of the Glories of Mary

Catholic Culture Audiobooks

“Her glories are not only for the sake of her Son — they are for our sakes also.”

Happy Solemnity of the Assumption, everyone!

Listeners may recall that for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception last December, we featured another work by Newman, titled The Glories of Mary for the Sake of Her Son. Today's reading, On the Fitness of the Glories of Mary, is taken from the same volume.

Whereas in The Glories of Mary for the Sake of Her Son, Newman focuses primarily upon the then soon-to-be-defined dogma of the Immaculate Conception, here he draws special attention to Mary’s Assumption, and to the fitness — or, as he says, becomingness — of both dogmas.

Newman further points out that Mary’s glories are not only for the sake of her Son, but for the sake of us, the rest of her children, as well. So too may our celebration of this high feast day redound not only to God’s glory and her honor, but to an ever more true devotion to Our Lady and to Jesus living in her.
